Delaware vs. Widener

CHESTER, Pennsylvania, January 28. THE University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim teams set seven pool records on Thursday night as they swept Widener in a nonconference dual meet at the Schwartz Center. The men set five pool records en route to a 155-83 victory while the women took two pool records in a 165-80 win over the Pride.

The men (9-1, 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association) set records in the 200-yard medley relay, the 1000-yard freestyle, the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterfly. The women (8-4, 4-4 CAA) set pool records in the 200-yard medley relay and the 1000-yard freestyle event.

Matt Wehrman won the 1000-yard freestyle in a Schwartz Center record 9:43.07, which is also a team best for the season. Ross Buckwalter followed that performance with a 57.52 second time in the 100-yard breaststroke before Josh Hyman finished the meet off with a record in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.66. Zach Lowe was sandwiched between the two with a win in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.85.

The women won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.76, setting the pool record. Stephanie Dodd was next in line, finishing the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:47.35 to round out the records.

The women also used eight separate individual winners to glide by the Pride. Dodd, Cortney Barry, Courtney Raw, Donna Healy, Erinne Butler, Kristen McBrien, Megan Huber, Shea Solt, Marianne Flynn and Sarah Vandoren all posted first place finishes in eight different events, in addition to the 200-yard medley relay team of Raw, Flynn, Tori Gillespie and Butler.

Werhman also came in first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.39, finishing as the lone Blue Hen with two individual victories. The men totaled seven different winners as Grady Carter, Buckwalter, Lowe, Robert MacLeish, Ryan Roberts, Cole Clark, and Hyman joined Wehrman on the highest podium throughout the night.

The Blue Hens do not get much of a rest, as they are back in the pool on Saturday, January 29 to face off against William & Mary and UMBC in their final dual meets of the season. The first gun will sound at 1 p.m. The Blue Hens will also honor their 14 seniors during the first intermission.
