Daytona State College Officially Announces End of Swimming Program

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida, January 15. THE Daytona State College men's and women's swimming teams will make their final NCAA championship appearances in March, as the school's president has announced that the programs will be cut after this season.

In a statement released Monday, the school announced that “budgetary constraints, reduced enrollment and state cuts” were the reasons for ending the programs. The campus pool will still be in use after the teams vacate the facility, however. Water aerobics, swimming lessons and beach patrol training are just some of the programs that will continue to use the pool.

It's not the first time the Daytona State swim teams have experienced this news. The teams were cut in 1986 after winning women's national titles in 1980, 1981 and 1982, then returned in 2008 under the guidance of Steve Lochte.

Two years after taking the head coaching job, Lochte resigned as head coach after investigations into the team's misconduct involving drug use off-campus and low grade point averages. Additionally, Lochte's DUI charges were a part of the resignation. Former Daytona swimmer Don Gibb took over as head coach, bringing the team up the national ranks to as high as second.

According to an article in the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the school will add women's volleyball next season.
