Day One of Swimming Concludes at Speedo Grand Challenge

IRVINE, California, May 26. LAST night, one of the storylines of the Speedo Grand Challenge held in Irvine, Calif., was the return of Amanda Beard to competition. Meanwhile, organizers held seven event finals on the initial evening of long course meter battles.

Beard, swimming for Trojan Swimming, placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.16 as Julia Smit won the event in 2:15.01 and her Stanford teammate Elaine Breeden took second in 2:18.75. Beard also clocked a 1:11.12 in the 100 breast prelims for the fourth-best time of the morning, but elected to focus on the 200 IM at night. Tara Kirk went on to win the 100 breast in 1:08.18, while Keri Hehn (1:08.86) and Rebecca Soni (1:09.63) finished second and third, respectively.

Other winners during the evening included James Goddard in the men's 200 IM (2:02.26), Melanie Marshall in the women's 50 free (26.10), Jason Lezak in the men's 50 free (22.83), Chris Cook in the men's 100 breast (1:02.25) and Alyssa Anderson in the women's 400 free (4:15.01).
