David Carry Has Strong Night of Swimming at Speedo Grand Challenge
IRVINE, California, May 26. GREAT Britain's David Carry doubled in the 200 and 400 freestyles to highlight the second day of action at the Speedo Grand Challenge. Carry opened Saturday's championship session by claiming victory in the 200 free with a mark of 1:49.50, ahead of the 1:49.94 by countryman Ross Davenport. Capping the night, Carry won the 400 free in 3:50.73, a time that bettered the 3:53.00 of David Davies.
For the United States, Julia Smit led the way with a pair of first-place finishes. The Stanford University standout prevailed in the 400 individual medley with a swim of 4:43.46. She later took top honors in the 200 backstroke with a performance of 2:15.43, quicker than the 2:17.56 of Britain's Melanie Marshall, who won the 200 free in 2:00.17.
Smit's Stanford teammate, Elaine Breeden, defeated the competition in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.30. Other winners included Britain's Euan Dale in the men's 400 I.M., thanks to a time of 4:21.99, and Pat Cary in the men's 100 fly (54.37). Great Britain's James Goddard was swiftest in the 200 backstroke on the male side with a showing of 2:01.05.
