Dave Salo Visits Inside With Brett Hawke Podcast; Discusses Stars, Mentors, Doping And More

One of the premier coaches in the world, evidenced by his success with Irvine Novaquatics, the University of Southern California and Trojan Swim Club, Dave Salo recently sat down for a lengthy interview with the Inside with Brett Hawke Podcast. Salo and Hawke, who has turned his podcast episodes into must-watch events, touched on numerous topics during their two-hour chat.

Among the topics covered was the excellence produced by Salo during his coaching career, including the development of Aaron Peirsol as a teenage star who would go on to become one of the best backstrokers in history. Salso has also mentored the likes of Olympic champions Amanda Beard, Rebecca Soni and Ous Mellouli, among others.

In an early segment of the interview, Hawke and Salo discuss the upcoming World Short Course Championships, where Salo will serve as the head coach of the United States squad. They also spent time focusing on the breaststroke, where Salo has arguably made his biggest impact as a coach. Another focal point was the influence of the likes of legendary coaches Jon Urbanchek and Peter Daland.

Hawke also spoke with Salo about the issue of doping and addressed the fact that a few of Salo’s athletes, notably Russian Yuliya Efimova, have tested positive during their careers for performance-enhancing substances. Salo emphasized that he warns his athletes to stay away from supplements of any kind, although those warnings are not always heeded.
