Dara Torres, U.S. Olympic Men’s 400 Free Relay, Erin Popovich Named AAU Sullivan Award Semifinalists – VOTING OPEN

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida, March 5. ACCORDING to a release this morning, the Amateur Athletic Union has named Dara Torres, the U.S. Olympic Men's 400 Free Relay Team and Erin Popovich as semifinalists for this year's AAU James E. Sullivan award. The award will be presented on April 15 at the New York Athletic Club.

The award, which is sometimes referred to as the Oscar of sports awards due to its longevity, has been given out for 78 years thus far. The Sullivan Award not only recognizes athletic achievement, but also honors "those who have shown strong moral character."

Online voting is a portion of the selection process and will be available at USAToday.com sometime soon. We will keep you posted when voting becomes available.

Torres finished the 2008 Beijing Games with three silver medals in the 50 free, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Olympic Men's 400 Free Relay has been noted as the most electrifying event in Olympic swimming history by a variety of sources. Jason Lezak's final leg to overtake Alain Bernard has gone down as one of the best finishes in the sport of swimming.

Popovich had an amazing 2008 Beijing Paralympics as she won four gold and two silver medals as well as set a pair of world records in the process.
