Dana Vollmer Sizzles With Winning 100 Fly Performance

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, June 27. WORLD-record holder and Olympic champion Dana Vollmer torched the back half of her women's 100-meter fly to surface triumphant from the event at the U.S. Nationals and World Championship Trials.

Vollmer, who trailed fellow Olympian Claire Donahue at the turn, came home in 30.81 to secure a 57.53 for the win. That time vaulted Vollmer to third in the world behind only Alicia Coutts (57.18) and Katerine Savard (57.40). As has been a theme in this post-Olympic year, Vollmer only started back to training earlier this year after taking an extended period of time off following her Olympic triumph.

Donahue, who went out hard with a 26.63 at the turn, raced home for second with a time of 58.32. That's still outside the top 10 in the world, but is enough to likely put her on the Barcelona squad.

Stanford's Felicia Lee, following shoulder surgery last fall, produced a strong outing with a third-place time of 59.21. She's been in the 58s a handful of times previously, but her performance this evening definitely demonstrates she's recovering well from her injury.

Auburn's Olivia Scott (59.25), Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson (59.30), Aggie's Caroline McElhany (59.33), T2's Erika Erndl (59.52) and North Coast's Kendyl Stewart (59.52) also vied for the national title behind Voller this evening.

Mission Viejo's Katie McLaughlin turned in a 59.70 to win the B final of the 100 fly, edging her previous personal best of 59.81 from the 2012 Junior National Championships. The Nadadore made some noise during the Arena Grand Prix, and is making good on some of those initial indications of greatness.

NCAP's Cassidy Bayer, 13, made a run at the 13-14 U.S. National Age Group record with a sizzling time of 59.99 to win the C final. That swim just missed Stewart's record of 59.51 from 2009. Bayer came into tonight with a 1:01.15 lifetime best, marking a huge time drop.
