Czech Nationals Underway in Prague

PRAGUE, Czech Republic, July 13. THE Czech National Championships, an Olympic qualifying event, opened up in Prague with swimming in the 50 and 400 free, 100 back, 200 breast and 200 fly events.

Jana Klusackova won the women's 50 free in a time of 26.50. She had to hold off Petra Klosova, who placed second in 26.91. Meanwhile, another close battle occurred in the men's 50 free with Ondrej Fleischmann emerging victorious in 23.61. Lukas Harnol (23.71) and Martin Verner (23.75) both gave Fleischmann nearly all he could handle in the splash-and-dash.

Martina Moravcikova grabbed a close victory in the 200 breast with a time of 2:35.84. That effort defeated Petra Chocova's 2:36.04. The men's 200 breast also came down to the wire as Nikola Havlik won in 2:21.44 in front of Jiri Vlcek's 2:21.70.

After coming up short in the 50 free, Klosova came up on top in another tight finish, this time in the 100 back. She touched out Alena Nyvltova, 1:05.46 to 1:05.64, to capture the crown. The men's race had a bit more breathing room as Ondrej Cermak beat Jakub Schwarz, 1:01.13 to 1:01.91, in the men's 100 back.

The 200 fly gave the fans some time to catch their breath as both Silvie Rybarova (2:19.44) and Michal Rubacek (2:02.36) won the women's and men's races, respectively, in much more dominant fashions.

The same went for the 400 free races as Alzbeta Rehurkova (4:30.36) and Kvetoslav Svoboda (3:52.79) cruised to victory in the women's and men's finals, respectively.
