SOMERS, Wisconsin, April 25. ASHLEY Danner of George Mason University and Jon Christensen of Princeton University were named CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Swimmers-of-the-Year. The pair, along with eight additional men and twenty-two women, was also named to the Mid-Major All-American team.
The group earned the honor based on their qualification for the 2012 NCAA Division I Swimming Championships.
Danner earned the top honors by finishing second in the 100-yard-breaststroke and fifth in the 200-yard-breaststroke at the NCAA Championships held in Auburn. It equaled Western Kentcuky's Claire Donahue for the highest individual finish by a Mid-Major All American. Twenty schools placed swimmers on the first team with only Toledo, Harvard and UC-Santa Barbara placing more than one individual.
On the men's side, seven schools placed swimmers on the All-American team, led by Harvard and Princeton with one each. Christensen was a member of the Mid-Major Champion Princeton Tigers and edged out Eastern Michigan's Jacob Hanson for Swimmer-of-the-Year honors. Christensen finished among the top ten in both the 100 and 200-yard-breaststroke events.
An additional 130 male and 121 female swimmers were awarded Honorable Mention status.- Honorable mention selections are swimmers who were entered with NCAA 'B' standards, but not selected for the 2012 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. Those 251 swimmers represented eighty teams at fifty-nine sixty-two schools. Harvard and Western Kentucky each had eight women's Honorable Mention selections while the Naval Academy led the way with twelve Honorable Mention selections.
The following conferences have been designated as Mid-Majors: America East, Atlantic 10, Colonial Athletic Association, Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mountain Pacific, Missouri Valley, Patriot, Sun Belt, Summit, and Western Athletic. Institutions are also eligible by awarding fewer than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
