CSA Masters Coach Nancy Kirkpatrick-Reno Named 2008 SPMA Coach of the Year

SIMI VALLEY, California, May 4. CONEJO Simi Aquatics (CSA), a premier aquatics club serving the Simi and Conejo Valley areas, today announced that Nancy Kirkpatrick-Reno, Head Masters and Triathlon Swim Coach for the club, has been named the Southern Pacific Master's Association's (SPMA) 2008 Coach of the Year.

Chosen from finalists that were nominated by more than 55 SPMA-member clubs, Coach Reno was selected for her many accomplishments in 2008 including: growing the CSA Masters Program from 10 to 125 year-round swimmers and expanding to 300+ in the summer with Triathlon and open water swimmers; hosting the successful Long Course Regional Masters Championship at Cal Lutheran University's Samuelson Aquatics Center in August 2008 during which six world records and one national mark were set, and her efforts in promoting Masters swimming which included a feature story in the Los Angeles Times Health & Fitness section which appeared in January 2009.

Coach Reno has demonstrated her commitment to Masters swimming in the Conejo Valley through her membership in the US Masters Swimming Marketing committee, SPMA Executive Board and USA-Triathlon. Coach Reno is a certified ASCA Coach for USA Swimming and US Masters Swimming, a triathlon expert swim coach for Amgen Multi Sport, Seven Sins Multi Sport-Conejo Valley, and Tri-fit Multi-sport club. In addition, Coach Reno will be an on-deck coach for all masters swimmers at the United States Masters National Swimming Championships in Clovis, California May 9-12, in addition to coaching the Conejo Simi Aquatic Masters Team athletes.

Before turning to coaching, Nancy Reno had an extraordinary swim career. Nancy began swimming at age 12 and by 14 was competing in her first Senior Nationals competition. Swimming for legendary Santa Clara Swim Club Coach, George Haines, Nancy competed at her first USA Olympic Trials at the age of 16. She held National age group records in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke and in the 200 and 400 Medley Relays, several American Records in the 1970s as part of the USA and Santa Clara Swim Club 4X100 Medley Relays, and was ranked in the Top Ten in the World from 1971-1975 in the backstroke events. Nancy won several National Championship titles with Santa Clara and competed on numerous USA National teams, traveling around the world for elite competitions. In 1973, Nancy became one of the first women to be offered a full collegiate swimming scholarship under Title 9. She chose to swim for the UCLA Bruins and was a collegiate All-American at the University. Nancy is a Masters Swimming All American and three-time Masters World Swimming Champion.

The SPMA Coach of the Year award is given to outstanding Masters Swimming coaches who have been nominated by their peers and swimmers based on the following criteria: letters of nomination and support; both club and individual accomplishments during the past year including club size, growth and results; publications, articles and newsletters; contributions to US Masters and SPMA including meets hosted, clinics run, participation in the local masters swim chapter committees and presentations; and long-terms contributions to swimming.

The Southern Pacific Master's Association (SPMA) is part of the Southwest zone of United States Masters Swimming. Masters Swimming is an organized program of swimming for adults designed to promote health and fitness in its members who participate in a variety of ways ranging from lap swimming to international competition.
