Crean Lutheran Girls, Oak Ridge Boys Claim California High School State Crowns

The second annual California high school state championships took place yesterday and today in Clovis. While a number of top swimmers did not attend the meet in favor of turning their attention towards the long course season, a number of meet records did fall.

Girls Meet

Crean Lutheran claimed the women’s team title with 147 points, not far ahead of Palo Alto with 135. Ayala earned 129 points for third, just edging out Martin Luther King with 128.

Palo Alto’s Zoe LuskGrace ZhaoKatie Francis, and Claire Lin started the meet off with a win in the girls 200 medley relay, touching in 1:42.41. In second was Granite Bay’s Chloe ClarkIsabella SangrawHeaven Quintana, and Kassidy Henson in 1:43.84. Monte Vista’s Gillian FlathZoie HartmanMakenna Turner, and Isabella Barattolo completed the podium in 1:44.04.

Zhao, Zoe LuskPeyton Weng, and Lin combined for a meet record 1:33.64 for Palo Alto in the 200 freestyle relay.

Senior Kenisha Liu of Ayala had a large victory in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:46.17. Second place finisher Lauren Green of Pioneer stopped the clock in 1:48.08. Miranda Heckman was third in 1:48.25.

Liu grabbed another victory in the 100 freestyle, this time in meet record fashion, when she stopped the clock in 49.01. MenloAther’s Izzi Henig got second in 49.16. Claire Fisch of Martin Luther King snagged third in 49.54.

The top two finishers in the 200 IM broke the two minute barrier. Chloe Isleta of Presentation led the way in 1:59.27 while Glendora’s Alexis Margett also slid under the barrier in 1:59.78. Ayala’s Mikki Thompson completed the podium with her 2:00.35.

Elise Garcia of Crean Lutheran set the meet record in prelims of the women’s 50 freestyle with her 22.64. In finals she was slightly slower in 22.75, still good enough for the win. Henig won silver in 22.82 and Fisch placed third in 22.96.

Glendora’s Alexis Margett took down the 100 butterfly meet record, stopping the clock in 52.77. Green finished second in 53.65, and Emily Eastin of Crean Lutheran earned bronze with her 54.12.

Granada’s Heckman recorded a meet record in prelims of the women’s 500 freestyle when she touched in 4:46.13. At night, the freshman finished in 4:46.45. Courtney Tseng of Sunny Hills earned runner up, just behind in 4:46.87. Crean Lutheran’s Brittany Kampfer earned third in 4:47.95.

Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou of Santa Clara was first to the wall in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 53.50, not far ahead of Granite Bay’s Chloe Clark in 53.67. Chloe Isleta from Presentation was third in 54.02.

Halle Morris of Terra Linda claimed the 100 breaststroke title in 1:01.30. Tulare Western’s Mallory Korenwinder was just behind in 1:01.40. Zhao secured third in 1:01.54.

Courtney Vincent, Anissa BarrosoLauren Vitort, and Claire Fisch combined for a 3:24.77 to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Boys Meet

Oak Ridge High School scored 136 points, just ahead of San Ramon Valley with 130. Clovis High School secured third with 107.

The team from Oak Ridge out touched the team from San Ramon to open the meet. Colby MeffordEthan DillardBryce Mefford, and Leon Kassianeko touched in 1:32.29, ahead of Jake RolloHank PoppeSpencer Daily, and Teagan Cheney in 1:32.36. Andrew ChoRobert ChengAlex Liang, and Matthew Liang earned third in 1:33.57.

The men from Clovis finished the 200 freestyle relay in meet record time of 1:23.12, thanks for Graham HaussJacob RolihJesse Serpa, and Zach Koch. In the 400 freestyle relay, they came up short of the meet record, but Hauss, Rolih, Seth Nabors, and Koch touched in 3:03.53.

Alex Liang finished in meet record time of 1:36.65 on his way to victory in the 200 freestyle. Liam O’Haimhirgin of Bella Vista touched second in 1:36.67 and third went to Jarod Hatch with a 1:37.49.

Alex Liang won again in the 500 freestyle, setting another meet record with his 4:23.41. Hatch won silver this time in 4:26.73. Jordan Blitz of Torrey Pines completed the podium in 4:28.46.

Dillard was well ahead of the field for an individual victory in the 200 IM, when he touched in 1:47.58. Amador Valley’s Chris Jhong finished second in 1:49.37. Karl Arvidsson of Woodside snagged third in 1:50.51.

Albert Gwo of Los Altos won the 50 freestyle in 20.07. Mater Dei’s Christian Hockenbury earned silver in 20.55 and Benjamin Ho of St. Francis took bronze in 20.59.

Mefford added to his relay victory with an individual title in the 100 butterfly, stopping the clock in 47.89. University City’s Brendan Santana touched in 48.20, just ahead of third place Grant Watson (48.25) from College Prep.

Another meet record fell in prelims of the boy’s 200 freestyle relay when the San Ramon team of Teagan CheneyJackson CardinalHanke Poppe, and Brannan Haket touched in 1:23.26.

O’Haimhirgin was first to the wall in the 100 freestyle, touching in 43.86. Gwo was second in the 100, stopping the clock in 44.05. Hart’s Adam Osowski finished third in 45.32.

Christopher Staka of Aptos went a 47.67 in prelims of the 100 backstroke to set another meet record. Tonight he was even faster in 47.39. Ho touched second in 48.45. Santana finished third with a 49.19.

Poppe also earned an individual meet record with his prelims 100 breaststroke swim of 54.72. Today he turned in a 54.97 for the state title. Sierra’s Scott Tolman was second in 55.21. Karl Arvidsson of Woodside was third with a 55.30.
