“We remain keenly focused on providing New Jersey’s student athletes with the opportunity to participate in sports, and given the current health data and modeling, we believe pushing the schedules back ensures the best opportunity for our kids,” said Colleen Maguire, the Chief Operating Officer of the NJSIAA. “As was the case in the fall, the potential for play is ultimately based on everyone working together to keep our communities safe and healthy.”
COVID-19 Leads New Jersey to Significantly Delay Start of Winter Sports
New Jersey Significantly Delays Start of Winter Sports Season
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) announced on Thursday that the start of its winter sports season will be significantly delayed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As far as swimming is concerned, schools can begin holding practices on Feb. 1, with competition starting on Feb. 16. The final day of the season will be March 27. The NJSIAA previously decided to eliminate this year’s state championships.
The decision from the NJSIAA is related to rising COVID-19 cases in New Jersey and restrictions on indoor gatherings that have been put in place by Governor Phil Murphy. When the winter sports season begins in February, it is highly unlikely that spectators will be permitted at any of the events.
