Commonwealth Games Finals, Day Three Finals: Angharad Evans Wins Scotland’s First Gold in Women’s 100 Breast
For the first time at the Commonwealth Games, a Scottish female swimmer has won gold in the 100 breaststroke, with 23-year-old Angharad Evans topping the field. Evans touched in a time of 1:06.07. The race was tight at the halfway point, where Evans sat in second place. But the Scot split 35.1 on the last 50, which was the fastest in the field, and allowed her to claim gold.
Evans had the fastest time coming into the meet and swam the fastest time in every session. This is Evans’ first individual international long course medal. After finishing 18th at the 2025 World Championships, Evans is back on form at the international level. Currently ranked first in the world at 1:04.96, Evans has never had trouble posting fast times. Doing it when it matters most has been the issue. Tonight, she finally broke through. Even though the time was not great by Evans’ standards, getting the win is an important step in her = career.
Aimee Canny from South Africa finished in second place. She swam 1:06.19, just .12 off of gold. Canny was strong going out, touching first at the 50-meter mark in a time of 30.67. Even though this is her first international medal, the University of Virginia swimmer is no stranger to the podium at big meets. Canny finished second in the 200-yard breast at the 2026 NCAA Championships.
Aussie 17-year-old Sienna Toohey rounded out the podium in third place. Toohey was the youngest swimmer in the field and swam to a time of 1:06.47. The last time the Australian women didn’t have someone on the podium of the 100 breast was 1990. Toohey helped extend that streak.
Notably, no swimmers on the podium recorded a best time. Compared to the semifinals, the final was quite a bit slower, with nerves likely playing a role.
