Liam Gately has given his verbal commitment to swim for Northwestern University beginning in the 2017-2018 season. Gately is a distance swimmer for Loveland Swim Club in Colorado.

Gately shared,

“I chose Northwestern because I felt it offered a well rounded program that I could both thrive in athletically and academically. Northwestern is a great university with an outstanding coaching staff and team atmosphere. I am looking forward to developing both as a student and athlete and I feel honored to be given this once in a lifetime opportunity. Go Cats!”

His best times are:

  • 200 Free 1:39.21
  • 500 Free 4:24.70
  • 1000 Free 9:17.26
  • 1650 Free 15:10.26
  • 400 IM 4:02.37

This summer Gately swam the 1500 freestyle at Olympic Trials. Swimming for Thompson Valley High School, Gately is the defending Colorado 4A High School State Champion in the 500 freestyle. Last year he won the event in 4:33.71 and finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.41). As a sophomore in 2015 he posted a 4:34.22 to win the 500.

Northwestern finished eighth at the 2016 Big Ten Conference Championship. Gately will be a huge addition to the distance program. His best mile time would have finished seventh last year. Carter Page (15:24.22) was the team’s top finisher in 2016. Gately would also have been a B finalist in the 500 freestyle.
