College Recruit Rankings Profile: Five-Star Woody Joye, Class of 2010

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 15. WOODY Joye, a five-star recruit from the Class of 2010, is the next subject in this summer's series of Swimming World College Recruit Rankings Profiles. Joye swims for Stanhope Elmore High and Montgomery YMCA Barracudas.

Joye maintains his profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, and has strong long course meter times to his credit (100m free 51.57; 200m free 1:52.08; 200m back 2:04.83; 100m fly 55.12; 200m IM 2:06.63)

Joye also would have cleared the NCAA Division I B cut in three events last year (200y free 1:36.65; 200y IM 1:47.09; 400y IM 3:50.33) with top short course yard times.

When and where did you start swimming?
I started swimming when I was 5 years old on a summer team in Prattville, Ala., called the Prattville Flying Fish (PFF).

Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
Well, first off I would have to say my parents. Of course, without them all of this wouldn't be possible.

The most influential coach I have had would be Joe Reynolds. He was my first coach on PFF, and he still gives me good advice and always has time to talk to me to this day.

What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
My best moment thus far wouldn't necessarily be a race, but when the colleges were able to start calling. It got me excited and made me feel like the time and effort was starting to pay off.

Walk us through a day of practice:
If I go in the morning, I get to the long course pool in Prattville around 5:15. I swim until 7:30. Afternoon practice starts at 3:00. We usually do dryland or weights for 45 minutes then swim until 5:30.

What is your favorite set?
My favorite sets are VO2 Max sets where we sprint 100s or 200s with a lot of rest. They take up a lot of time, but at the same time they are tough, and I feel like I got something done that day.

What is your least favorite set?
I don't have a least favorite set, but I dislike most the sets that are long and boring. Like a 2000 pull, or 3x1000s. We rarely ever do those, though.

What are your short-term goals?
My short-term goals are to do well in my events at my shave meet this year. And, try to swim times that will impress colleges.

What are your long-term goals?
My long-term goals are to go to a college that fits me, and will help me to become the best I can be, and also to get an education for life after swimming is over, whenever that may be. Of course, every athlete dreams of competing in the Olympics, but that is a few years down the road, and I just plan on taking it one step at a time.

What colleges are you interested in so far?
In no particular order: Texas, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, and Arizona.

What has the recruiting process been like so far, now that you are allowed to be called by coaches?
It's more fun than I expected it to be. It's also more difficult than I thought it would be.
