After 31 seasons with the Clarkson University Athletic Department, head swimming & diving coach Mick Maguire has announced his retirement.

Over the years, many coaches have become synonymous with certain sports at Clarkson University, but none more so than Maguire, who has guided the Golden Knights’ swimmers and divers since 1987. Along with his coaching duties, Maguire spent the last few years serving as an assistant athletic director and also formerly worked as the women’s tennis coach and assistant women’s lacrosse coach.

“Mick has impacted nearly 500 student-athletes lives over the years and has been a driving force behind our Intramural and Recreation program,” Clarkson Athletic Director Steve Yianoukos remarked. “Although we are excited for Mick to start the next chapter of his life, we are certainly going to miss his insight, knowledge, and, above all, his great sense of humor. I would like to thank Mick for all he has done and wish him well in his retirement.”

Under Maguire’s tutelage, four swimmers have participated at the NCAA Championships, and his athletes have also excelled in the classroom where they have amassed numerous academic honors.

A 1985 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, Maguire swam freestyle events for the Bears’ swim team and was a member of Potsdam’s 1982 SUNYAC Championship squad. He held the Bears’ school record in the 500 free and also had the fastest time at the SUNYAC Championship Meet in the 1650 free for nearly three decades. A native of Malone, NY, Maguire was selected to the Franklin Academy High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his impressive performance as a high school athlete. He became the first Section X swimmer in history to break the five-minute mark in the 500 freestyle, a feat he accomplished twice, and he held school and Northern Athletic Conference records in five individual events (50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle events and the 200 individual medley) and two relays (200 medley and 400 freestyle).

Maguire’s replacement as head coach of the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving program will be announced on Thursday afternoon.
