Claire Curzan Just Misses 15-16 NAG Record in 100 Fly
Olympic hopeful Claire Curzan, a rising 16-year-old star, narrowly missed the 15-16 National Age Group record in the long course 100-meter butterfly on Saturday night. As her team, the TAC Titans, held its latest competition, Curzan clocked a time of 57.57 in the 100 fly, an effort that was just off the NAG standard of 57.48, posted by Torri Huske in 2019.
Curzan was out in 26.52 and came home in 31.05 to reaffirm her status as a top contender for a berth to next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. The 100 butterfly is shaping up to be an intriguing event, with veteran Kelsi Worrell being pursued by teens Curzan and Huske and, potentially, Regan Smith. Prior to Saturday night, Curzan’s best in the event was 57.87.
Curzan returned to the water later in the evening and recorded a time of 55.68 in the 100 freestyle, an effort .03 off her personal best.
North Carolina State product Coleman Stewart was the winner of the men’s 100 fly, as his time of 53.84 held off the 53.88 of Jack Saunderson, while former Texas product Tate Jackson prevailed in the 100 freestyle in 50.78.
