CIF Releases Psych Sheets For California High School Championships; Several National Records On Notice

Last weekend, Rex Maurer headlined the CIF-Southern Section Championships with a national high-school record in the 500-yard freestyle. A senior at Loyola who is bound for Stanford University, Maurer clocked 4:12.70 to clip .17 off the previous record of Grant Shoults, who went 4:12.87 during the 2016 campaign.

Does Maurer have an even faster time in his arsenal?

On Sunday, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) released the psych sheets for the CIF Championships, which will be held from Thursday through Saturday at Clovis West High School. Maurer is entered as the top seed in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, while Loyola is seeded first in both freestyle relays and second in the 200 medley relay.

Not only could Maurer press his newly minted high school standard in the 500 freestyle, he is within striking distance of the scholastic record in the 200 freestyle. Maurer turned in a time of 1:33.54 at the Southern Section Champs, with the high school record sitting to Aaron Shackell at 1:32.85. Shackell posted that time while representing Carmel High at the Indiana State Championships.

San Marino’s Daniel Li will also be one to watch, as he won his section title over the weekend in the 100 breaststroke behind a time of 52.43. That effort makes Li the top seed in the event by nearly two seconds.

On the girls’ side, Santa Margarita is seeded No. 1 in all three relays and is expected to make a run at some national records. Sophomore Teagan O’Dell is seeded first in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, and has the potential to challenge the national mark in the 200 IM, which belongs to Torri Huske at 1:53.73. O’Dell was 1:54 on two occasions during Southern Sections.
