Chupkov, Grinev And Chikunova Among Strong Field To Compete At Russian Championships

World 200m breaststroke champion Anton Chupkov and 2019 triple world medallist Vladislav Grinev are among the swimmers set to compete at the Russian Championships running from 25-30 October in Kazan, Russia.The event at the Aquatics Palace – which staged the diving programme at the 2015 World Championships – will serve as a qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics.

More than 700 swimmers will compete at the championships with Andrei Minakov who won silver in the 100 fly among three medals at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju – and 50 fly silver medallist Oleg Kostin joining world-record holder Chupkov and Grinev.

Eugenia Chikunova – the European junior champion who won the 200br at the Russian Swimming Cup earlier this month in 2:22.95 – and world 50 back bronze medallist Daria Vaskina are also set to feature.

However, Vlad Morozov and Kirill Prigodawho beat Chupkov over 200m breaststroke at the Russian Swimming Cup – will be absent, competing at the International Swimming League for Tokyo Frog Kings and London Roar respectively.

So too Maria Kameneva – triple 2018 European medallist – who was integral to Roar’s crushing victory in the opening match of the ISL, contributing 47.5pts. 

Double Rio 2016 silver medallist Yulia Efimova – who is based in the United States – will also miss the meet because of travel restrictions and quarantine requirements imposed during the pandemic.
