Chinese National Games: Liu Zige Scares World Record in 100 Fly

JINAN, China, October 18. THE second day of long course action at the Chinese National Games featured some fast swimming. Along with one near world record swim, a pair of Asian records fell.

Liu Zige claimed the Asian record in the 100 fly with a winning effort of 56.07. The performance smashed the continental mark of 56.86 previously held by Jiao Liuyang set at the 2009 World Championships. She came within just .01 seconds of Sarah Sjostrom's world record time of 56.06, also set in Rome. Jiao finished second in 57.40 with Deng Biying placing third in 57.41.

Chen Qian crushed the Asian record in the women's 400 free with a time of 4:02.35. That swim erased the 4:05.00 set by Chen Yan back in 1997.

Xie Zhi topped the Chinese record in the men's 100 breast with a time of 1:00.73. That effort cleared the national record of 1:01.15 set by Zhang Guoying in April. Qu Jingyu took second in 1:01.17, while Ma Xiang placed third in 1:01.21.
