Charlotte UltraSwim Set to Go

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 7. THE fourth stop on the United States Grand Prix circuit, the Charlotte UltraSwim will get under way later today with timed finals in the distance events. The meet will then pick up steam this weekend with a full slate of action at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center running Friday through Sunday.

The competition will feature a number of major names in American swimming, most notably Gary Hall Jr. The two-time defending Olympic gold medalist in the 50 freestyle, Hall is expected to race his prime event as a tuneup for this summer's Pan American Games. More, his effort will provide a gauge as to where Hall stands a little more than a year out from the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hall should battle with the man who is a rising force on the international sprint scene, North Carolina State product Cullen Jones. The silver medalist in the 50 freestyle at the World Championships in Melbourne earlier this year, Jones was ranked No. 1 in the world last year in the 50 free and was also the Pan Pacific Championships titlist.

Other big names expected to compete in Charlotte will be Maritza Correia, Mark Gangloff and Mary DeScenza. Correia is among the top female sprinters in the U.S. while Gangloff rates as one of the world's premier breaststrokers. DeScenza, meanwhile, has long been a significant player internationally in the 200 butterfly.
