Central Connecticut State vs. Florida International

MIAMI, Florida, January 14. THE future is now for FIU Head Coach Randy Horner and his FIU swimming & diving team as underclassmen accounted for 10-of-11 individual wins in a 174-120 route of Central Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon.

Not to be outdone by the young pups on the squad, senior and reigning Sun Belt Swimmer of the Week, Kariann Stevens, took first place in the 100 Butterfly, winning the event in her final home match of her career on senior day. She also teamed with fellow senior Vicnan Torres and freshmen Klara Andersson and Nadia Farrugia to take the gold in the 400 Free Relay.

Along with Stevens and Torres, FIU also honored fellow seniors Sabrina Dow, and Elly James.

Sophomore Sonia Perez Arau was the big winner for the Panthers on Saturday afternoon, taking a total of three individual events to account for 27 points in those three victories. She took first in the 1000 Free, 200 Back and the 400 IM.

Sophomore and reigning Sun Belt Diver of the Week, Sabrina Beaupre, once again took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She now has a whopping 14 victories during the 2011-12 season.

Sophomore Johanna Gustafsdottir won both the 100 Back and 500 Free events. Freshmen Farrugia (200 Free), Andersson (100 Free) and Jeanmarie Madison (200 Breaststroke) each took home one event on the afternoon.

The Panthers will return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Ft. Myers, Fla. to take on Florida Gulf Coast University.
