CCIW Championships: Day One

KENOSHA, Wisconsin, February 18. THE first day of the 2010 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's & Women's Swimming Championships concluded on Thursday evening in Kenosha, Wis.

On the women's side, Wheaton leads with a score of 268, followed by Carthage (247), Illinois Wesleyan (171), Augustana (79), Millikin (67), Rose-Hulman (59) and North Central (50).

On the men's side, Carthage leads with a score of 290.5, followed by Wheaton (208.5), Illinois Wesleyan (157.5), Rose-Hulman (131), Augustana (81.5) and Millikin (66).

Before the beginning of the finals on Thursday, Carthage's Isaac Rothenbaum (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was presented with the 2008-09 NCAA Division III Sportsmanship Award. John Blanchard, the chair of the NCAA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee and senior associate athletics director at the University of North Carolina, made the presentation to Rothenbaum.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Lisa Tiltges (St. Charles, Ill./Rosary), Alyssa Messina (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park), Michelle Pelka (Elgin, Ill./Elgin Academy) and Amanda Croix (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) of Carthage won with a CCIW championship record time of 1:35.51 to open up the evening's events. Carthage also won the 200 freestyle relay on the men's side as Nathan Ripley (Middleton, Wis./H.S.), Ryan Ortmann (Woodstock, Ill./H.S.), Blake Bendix (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and Rothenbaum took first with a time of 1:23.44.

Wheaton's Lauren Jurgens (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) took home the night's first individual title in the 500 freestyle (5:01.46-CCIW championship record). Illinois Wesleyan's Angela Lugg (Woodbury, Minn./H.S.) was second (5:08.13). Carthage's Kyle Drake (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) won the men's 500 freestyle (4:39.60) while Illinois Wesleyan's Chris Betzle (East Moline, Ill./United) was second (4:43.39).

In the 200 IM, Pelka won Carthage's first individual title with a time of 2:07.82 while Illinois Wesleyan's Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was second (2:10.97). Carthage's Doug Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) won the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:56.16 while Illinois Wesleyan's Tommy Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was second (1:57.08).

Croix was champion in the women's 50 freestyle (23.07-CCIW championship record). Wheaton's Moire Yue (Edina, Minn./H.S.) placed second (24.19). Ripley won the men's 50 freestyle (20.96) while Ortmann was second (21.30).

In the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay team of Jensena Paul (Portage, Wis./H.S.), Tiltges, Pelka and Croix of Carthage won with a CCIW championship record time of 3:54.84. Carthage also won on the men's side as Drake, Alex Van Huis (Winneconne, Wis./H.S.), Schranck and Ripley took the title with a time of 3:26.81.

The CCIW Swimming Championships will continue on Friday, February 19 with the prelims of the women's 400 IM at 10:30 a.m. The finals will begin with the women's 200 medley relay at 6 p.m.
