Cavalier Teams Split Meets with North Carolina

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, January 20. THE Virginia swimming and diving teams split a pair of meets with North Carolina Saturday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The No. 17 ranked Cavalier men (6-2, 5-0 ACC) topped No. 22 North Carolina (3-3, 2-1) 161-137 to remain unbeaten in the conference. The No. 20 ranked Cavalier women (4-3, 4-1 ACC0 suffered their first ACC loss of the season, falling to the No. 17 ranked Tar Heels (6-1, 3-0) 182-118.

The Cavalier men won 9 of the 16 events. In the 1000 free, John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) was a two-event winner for Virginia, taking first place in a season-best time of 9:07.01 in the 1000 free and a time of 4:28.55 in the 500 free. Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia) and Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md.) went 1-2 in both of the breaststroke events, with times of 54.47 and 56.44 respectively in the 100, and 1:59.77 and 2:00.91 in the 200. Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) swept the butterfly events, with a time of 1:47.59 in the 200 and 49.64 in the 100. Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was also a double winner, taking the 200 free with a time of 1:39.58, and going 1-2 in the 200 I.M. with Rogulj, in a winning time of 1:49.57.

The Cavaliers also won the first relay of the day, as the team of Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas), Rogulj, Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va.), and Rich Hutton (Leicestershire, U.K.) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:30.80.

The women's team won 5 of the 16 events. Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) was a two-time winner, taking top spot in 100 backstroke (55.71) and 200 backstroke (1:59.22). Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) won the 100 free in a time of 50.70. Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.) was the winner of the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.09.

The women also won the first relay of the day, as the team of Christensen, Katherine McDonnell (Culpeper, Va.), Glover, and Lewis won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:42.96.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, January 28 as they visit Pittsburgh.
