Cate Campbell broke her Australian and Commonwealth record during the women’s 50-meter free semifinals at the 2016 Australian Nationals.

Campbell turned in the third-fastest time ever with a stunning 23.93 in the women’s splash-and-dash.  Only Britta Steffen (23.73) and Therese Alshammar (23.88) have been faster as Campbell broke a tie with Fran Halsall for the world’s textile best of 23.96 that had previous stood as Campbell’s Australian record.

Campbell’s time is the first under 24 this year, clearing Sarah Sjostrom’s 24.17 from the Austin stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series as the top time in the world this year.

Bronte Campbell qualified second in 24.27 to move to fourth in the world behind Halsall’s 24.23 from the Golden Tour.

Shayna Jack (24.87), Brittany Elmslie (24.92), Holly Barratt (25.34), Yolane Kukla (25.43), Carla Buchanan (25.44) and Marieke D’Cruz (25.46) finished third through eighth to qualify for finals.

I’ll be so thrilled when the term “textile best” goes away. It reminds me of inept leadership, bizarre decision making, sensationalist reporting and records that beg for asterisks.
