Carmel High School Assistant Swim Coach Arrested Facing Child Pornography Charges
In a report from The Indianapolis Star, an assistant swim coach at Carmel High School in Indiana was arrested on Tuesday and is facing federal charges as prosecutors allege he filmed himself having sex with one of his athletes.
The coach, John C. Goelz, faces charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler’s office announced Thursday.
Goelz was a volunteer assistant coach at the high school since the 2015-16 school year and is no longer involved with the school or Carmel Swim Club, according to Courtney Taylor, a spokeswoman for Carmel Clay Schools.
Law enforcement learned of an alleged sexual relationship between Goelz and a girl he coached on the Carmel high school team. Investigators searched Goelz’s home and cell phone and they believe Goelz had sex with the girl on four separate occasions.
Investigators also found evidence on his cell phone including text messages indicating the relationship dating back to February 2018, as well as that Goelz filmed the sexual encounter on one occasion at a hotel, according to the Star. The video file was recovered from his cell phone by investigators, the Star reported.
Goelz was arrested Tuesday and has a detention hearing on July 10. If convicted, he could face a minimum of 15 years in prison.
Carmel High School has had a juggernaut of a girls swim team as they have won five straight national team titles from 2013-2017, as well as eight of the last nine public school national titles. They have also won a record 32 straight state titles.
Head coach Chris Plumb declined to comment when reached by the Indianapolis Star.
