Carleton vs. Gustavus Adolphus

ST. PETER, Minnesota, January 7. ANNIE Metcalf (Sr./Bath, Maine/Morse) led a 1-2-3 finish for the Knights in the100-yard backstroke as the Carleton College women's swimming & diving team opened the 2012 portion of its schedule with a dual meet at Gustavus Adolphus College. The Knights won three events on the day, while the Gusties posted a 203-96 victory.
Despite not having raced in nearly four weeks, "The teams brought a great sense of energy and determination to the meet," said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. "At this point in the season, one of the primary directives that we have for our athletes is to find ways to be better, and today we had some breakout performances and outstanding competitive races."

In the 100 backstroke, Metcalf reached the wall at 1:02.34 and was followed closely by Alison Coogan (Fy./River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and Grace Cormier (Jr./Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic). Cormier added a second-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley and was awarded the team's swimmer of the meet "Can of Corn" honor for her consistent and strong swims.

Erin McDuffie (Jr./Anchorage, Alaska/Service) was first to the wall in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.64. Sophie Pilhofer (Jr./Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) was the other event winner for the Knights, taking top honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.95.

Two other notable swims for Carleton were second-place results for Milana Socha (So.Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.52) and Maggie Alexander (Sr./Tigard,Ore./Tualatin) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.76).

Austen Chase (Sr./San Antonio, Texas/International School) was the Knights' top performer in the diving competitions, finishing third on both boards.

"We certainly have room for improvement," said Clark, "and we will see in the month that lies ahead. With more competitions and event-specific training coming in the next few weeks, I am excited to see both teams build upon the momentum that they established today."

The Knights host the College of Saint Benedict and Macalester College next Saturday, Jan. 14 at 12 p.m.
