Canadian Trials: Mary-Sophie Harvey, Maggie Mac Neil Set up Showdown as Liendo, McIntosh Close in on Records

The 2023 Bell Canadian Trials continued on Friday with the heats session.

The session saw strong performances from Josh Liendo and Summer McIntosh, as expected, but also a strong showing by the 100 freestylers, leading to what could be an intriguing final, especially on the women’s side.

The women’s 100 freestyle saw Mary-Sophie Harvey claim the top seed in 54.94, while Maggie Mac Neil was next in 55.18, ahead of Emma O’Croinin (55.35) and Hanna Henderson (55.36), setting up an interesting final.

In the men’s 100 free at the Canadian Trials, Josh Liendo is within sight of the Canadian record of 27.27 set by Brent Hayden in 2009. Liendo had a seed time of 47.55 and took the top seed in prelims with a 48.65, nearly a second ahead of Javier Acevedo (49.33) and the field, and a swim that looks to leave more in the tank for finals.

Summer McIntosh took the top seed in the 200 butterfly, getting to the wall in 2:09.52. The time was four seconds off her Canadian record of 2:05.05, but leaves plenty in the tank for a stronger performance during finals. Mabel Zavaros took the second seed in 2:11.71.

In the men’s 200 fly, Ilya Kharun cruised to the top seed with a swim of 1:57.84, two seconds ahead of Patrick Hussey (1:59.88) and the rest of the field.

The women’s 50 breaststroke saw Rachel Nicol take the top seed in 31.22, ahead of Avery Wiseman (31.41) and Sydney Pickrem (31.46).

The men’s 50 breast saw James Dergousoff claim the top spot in 27.63.

Katie Cosgriffe won the multi-class women’s 100 butterfly in 1:08.68.

Nicolas Bennett won the men’s multi-class 100 butterfly in 58.18.

Shelby Newkirk took the 50 free women’s multi-class in 34.27, while Nicolas-Guy Turbide took the men’s race in 24.74.
