Canadian Summer Nationals: Vancouver Dolphins Dominate First Night

EDMONTON, Canada, July 19. VANCOUVER Dolphins won three events and built a commanding lead in the team standings as the Canadian Summer Nationals got underway at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sport Centre.

Kier Maitland, representing host club Edmonton Keyano, kicked off the meet with a dominating swim in the men's 800m free. Maitland sliced 10 seconds off his seed- time to win in 8:04.15, ahead of Island Swimming's Eric Hedlin (8:08.32) and Hedlin's teammate, Will Brothers (8:09.86).

Sandrine Mainville of PPO and Noemie Thomas of Vancouver Dolphins put on a show in the women's 50m fly, separating themselves from the field and going neck-and-neck right to the finish. Mainville got to the wall first in 26.96, with Thomas right behind in 26.97. Guelph Marlin Aquatic Club's Chantique Payne slipped into third, also by .01, with a 27.45. Vancouver Dolphins' Kelly Aspinall and Coleman Allen went 1-2 in the men's 50m fly, posting times of 24.23 and 24.56, respectively. Toronto's Mike Smerek also broke through 25 seconds with a 24.94 for third.

Brittney Harley kept the ball rolling for Vancouver with a win in the 200m free. Harley swam a 2:02.37, besting Hyack's Sherry Liu (2:02.61) and Club Aquatique Montreal's Sarah-Lee Hevey (2:02.67). Hassaan Abdel-Khalik got Etobicoke Swimming its first win of the meet with a solid showing of 1:49.82. Chad Bobrosky of Cascade finished close behind in 1:50.17, while Island Swimming's Jeremy Bagshaw picked up third in 1:50.34.

Dominique Bouchard of Titans swam the fastest time in the women's 100m back, a 1:01.53. That bettered Genevieve Cantin's 1:01.78 and Lauren Lavigna's 1:02.44. Langley Olympians' Jake Tapp won the men's race by a fingernail, 55.75 to 55.76, over Newmarket Stingrays' Jeffery Swanston. Matthew Swanston, also of Newmarket, placed third in 55.98.

Noemie Thomas returned from her second place showing in the 50m fly to post the quickest 200m fly in 2:12.59. Brenna Maclean of West Vancouver Otters came in second in 2:13.88 while Breanne Siwicki of Manta rounded out the top three in 2:15.10. Oakville's Mack Darragh nearly broke two minutes in the men's race, but still came out on top in 2:00.30. Toronto's Zack Chetrat gave Darragh a good run but came up second in 2:00.63. Vancouver's Coleman Allen swam a 2:03.05 for third place.

Alexandra Aitchison captured the final event of the evening, the women's 1500m free, in 16:54.28. Nadine Williams of STSC finished three seconds back in 16:57.18, while Toronto's Heather Maitland came in third in 17:05.11.
