Canada will be sending 12 of its fastest young distance swimmers to the FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in September.

Six women and six men make up the team for the championships, which are being hosted in Eilat, Israel, from Sept. 6-8. Swimming Canada Distance/Open Water Coach Mark Perry will head up the team as Team Leader and Head Coach. The championships, which were first held in Hoorn, Netherlands, in 2016, take place every two years. Canada sent seven swimmers to that event.

“We are delighted with the team selections, which is the largest ever team to represent Canada at this event,” said Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson. “I look forward to seeing the athletes continue to progress at the championships.”

Most of the swimmers will also be taking part in the BestFest Open Water Competition from May 26-June 2 in Mallorca, Spain. This event will play a key part in the team’s preparation for world juniors.

“I’m extremely excited at the prospect of working with this very talented young team of swimmers,” Perry said. “Our strategy for the World Junior Open Water Championships has been to select the fastest young distance swimmers Canada has to offer and adding specific open water skills to that speed where it’s needed. The BestFest in Mallorca in May will form part of that preparation where there will be a focus on skills, tactics and individual race strategies. Some of those selected have already been very successful representing Canada in open water events at junior and senior levels.”
