Canada Cup: Sinead Russell Doubles Again

TORONTO, Ontario, November 26. FOR the second night in a row, Sinead Russell doubled up leading to her third and fourth titles of the Canada Cup held in Toronto. The meet format consists of short course meter prelims, and long course meter finals.

Russell beat both the LCM (1:00.25) and SCM (58.43) records in the women's 100 back. Genevieve Cantin took second in 1:03.18, while Samantha Cheverton earned third in 1:03.48. Russell doubled up with a 25.92 to win the women's 50 free. She bested the SCM meet record of 25.48 in prelims. Caroline Lapierre-Lamire took second in 26.02, while Marie-Pier Ratelle snagged third in 26.28.

Pascal Wollach topped the men's 100 back in an LCM meet record 56.35. Gleb Suvorov downed the SCM meet record with a 53.96, but drew a disqualification at night. Graham Hawes (56.53) and Matt Swanston (56.55) touched second and third tonight. Octavian Petre won the men's 50 free in 23.20 after tying with Martyn Forde with matching 22.65s in prelims to down the SCM meet record. Forde took second at night in 23.27, while Mat Maciuniak tied with Tom Miller for third with matching 23.31s.

Mariya Chekanovych set the LCM meet record with a 32.22 in the women's 50 breast after lowering the SCM record with a 32.06 in prelims. Amanda Reason placed second in 32.47, while Karyn Gagne tied Kayla Voytechek tied for third with matching 32.72s. Warren Barnes topped the men's 50 breast in 28.56 for the LCM meet record, while Jason Block set the SCM record with a 28.08 in prelims. Block finished fourth tonight in 28.78, while Andrew Poznikoff (28.71) and Mike Brown (28.76) took second and third.

Katerine Savard cruised to victory in the women's 200 fly with a 2:09.04 to set the LCM meet record. She also downed the SCM meet record with a 2:08.64 in prelims. Lindsay Delmar (2:13.77) and Vanessa Charron (2:15.46) finished second and third in the finale. Zack Chetrat dominated the men's 200 fly with an LCM meet record of 2:00.62. He also downed the SCM record with a 2:00.07 in prelims. David Sharpe (2:02.00) and Mack Darragh (2:02.32) rounded out the top three.

Cheverton touched out Brittany MacLean, 4:12.43 to 4:12.51, in the women's 400 free as both cleared the LCM record. Cheverton also lowered the SCM meet record with a 4:08.89 in the morning. Delmar earned third in 4:15.80. Frank Despond claimed the men's 400 free title in 3:57.01 after Tobias Oriwol lowered the SCM meet record with a 3:52.18 in prelims. Oriwol wound up fifth at night with a 4:00.90. Ray Betuzzi (3:57.42) and Hassaan Abdel-Khalik (3:58.45) finished second and third this evening.

Lucy Spencer captured the women's 200 IM title in 2:15.73 after downing the SCM meet record with a 2:14.24 in prelims. Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson finished second in 2:17.36, while Katie Caldwell grabbed third in 2:18.08 in finals. Oriwol bounced back with a 2:03.54 to win the men's 200 IM. Andrew Ford lowered the SCM meet record with a 2:01.68 in prelims before finishing second in 2:04.19 tonight. Bogdan Knezevic snatched third in 2:04.29.
