Cameron van der Burgh, Nefeli Valakelis Welcome First Child

Olympic gold medalist Cameron van der Burgh and wife Nefeli Valakelis announced the arrival of their first child on Instagram Saturday.

Harry David van der Burgh was born on Sept. 4. Cameron van der Burgh announced the addition on Instagram Saturday.

Van der Burgh represented South Africa at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics. He won gold in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the London Games in 2012, setting a world record. He added silver in the event in Rio four years later. He’s also won two golds (10 total medals) at the long-course world championships and four golds (eight total medals) at the short-course worlds plus four Commonwealth Games and six African Games golds.

Van der Burgh retired after short-course worlds in 2018. He contracted COVID-19 in March and waged a public struggle with the virus. He and Valakelis announced her pregnancy publicly at the end of May.
