The California swimming team had a strong first day at the men’s NCAA championships, and though the team is 52 points behind Texas in the overall standings, head coach Dave Durden and senior Chuck Katis are proud of the way the team is performing.

The 400 medley relay, both said, was an excellent way to finish the session as the Bears scored an American record. Durden said he plans to discuss race strategy with freshman Justin Lynch on his butterfly, saying Lynch got a bit too excited in his first NCAA final. Katis said having a full year of training at Cal helped him have a faster breaststroke split and putting the focus on himself and not the competition will help him tomorrow in the 100 breaststroke.
