California Men’s Swimming Begins NCAA Title Defense With Win Over Pacific

BERKELEY, California, October 10. THE California Golden Bears began defense of their NCAA Division I swimming and diving men's team title today with a decisive victory over the University of the Pacific with a score of 141 to 107.

The Bears won the first nine events, then swam exhibition for the remaining five. Junior Marcin Tarczynski and senior Trevor Hoyt were each responsible for two wins. They both teamed up for the victory in the 200 medley relay with seniors Austin Brown and Dana Foster with a time of 1:31.53. Tarczynski, the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 IM, returned to win the 100 backstroke in a time of 49.29. Hoyt, a runner-up in the 200 breast at the recent NCAAs, won the 100 breast today with a 56.60.

Will Hamilton, the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 butterfly, won that event today with a 1:48.67. He won that event at NCAAs with a 1:40.94.

The Hinshaw brothers each accounted for a win. Adam, a sophomore, won the 1000 freestyle with a 9:28.85. Ben, a senior, took the 200 freestyle with a 1:41.29.

Two freshmen notched their first collegiate wins today. Nick Dillinger took the 50 freestyle in 20.89, keeping Hinshaw from earning a double win today with a second-place time of 20.99. Jacob Pebley, a finalist in the 200 backstroke at the Olympic Trials, won that event handily today with a 1:49.39.

Junior Shayne Fleming gave Berkeley its other win of the day in the 100 freestyle with a 45.59.

Cameron Frank notched the first Pacific win of the day in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:13.14. Zach Zlotoff followed that up with a win in the 500 free with a 4:51.28. Dai Wilson gave Pacific the win in the 100 fly with a 51.15, and Oliver Simkovic won the 400 individual medley with a 4:06.30. Pacific closed the meet by capturing first-place points in the 400 freestyle relay with a 2:59.02 on the strength of swimmers Alan Nader, Gabriel Jones, Jordan Capper and Derek Schilling.

Though swimming in exhibition status, the Bears posted the fastest times of the day in the events in which they did not score points. Freshman Josh Prenot swam a 2:00.08 in the 200 breast today, ahead of Hoyt's 2:02.61. Prenot added another virtual victory in the 400 IM with a 3:56.61. Hamilton and Michael Haney battled in the 500 free for fastest man in that event, with Hamilton getting to the wall first in 4:36.14 to Haney's 4:36.29.

Tarczynski was the fastest swimmer in the field in the 100 butterfly, posting a 49.52 as an exhibition swimmer. And Berkeley's 400 free relay foursome of Hamilton, Sam Shimomura, Nick Towbridge and Trent Williams posted a 2:43.32 despite swimming exhibition.
