California Jumps to Early Lead at Pacific 12 Men’s Conference Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, March 3. THE men didn’t waste must time after the Pacific 12 women concluded their meet last night. The men opened up with a pair of relays this evening.

California’s Tony Cox (21.53), Trevor Hoyt (23.75), Tom Shields (19.86) and Shayne Fleming (19.28) blitzed their way to the title in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:24.42. Stanford’s Dave Nolan (21.38), Andrew Saeta (24.02), Jack Lane (20.15) and Aaron Wayne (18.93) finished a close second in 1:24.48. Third and fourth wound up finishing within half-a-second of the first-place Golden Bears, all under the NCAA A cut. Arizona took third in 1:24.83, while Southern California placed fourth in 1:25.04.

Southern California’s Chad Brobosky (1:35.10), Alex Lendrum (1:35.37), Cristian Quintero (1:32.58) and Dimitri Colupaev (1:33.83) topped the 800-yard free relay in 6:16.88. Meanwhile, California’s Trent Williams (1:34.60), Tom Shields (1:33.60), Michael Haney (1:36.44) and Will Hamilton (1:34.19) touched second in 6:18.83. Stanford’s Tom Kremer (1:34.57), Sean Duggan (1:36.08), Mitch Stoehr (1:36.38) and Thomas Stephens (1:35.29) earned third in 6:22.32, while Arizona’s Kelly Moodie (1:36.15), Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or (1:34.90), Matt Barber (1:36.15) and Woody Joey (1:35.68) also cleared the NCAA A cut with a fourth-place 6:22.88.
