LONG BEACH, California, May 13. QUICK performances highlighted the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Division I Championships as four records fell in one of the fastest meets in the country so far this year.

Team Scores
Mission Viejo pulled out a 253-point showing, taking the Division I title on the women's side of competition. Edison (Hb) tallied 219.5 points and took second while the women from Fountain Valley compiled a 151-point effort, which was worthy of a third-place finish.

Yucaipa was the sole men's team to break 200 points with 241, taking first. Redlands took second with 198 points while Los Alamitos came in third (150).

Women's Individual Results
Cynthia Fascella of Fountain Valley nabbed first in both sprint freestyle events. Fascella went a 23.08 50 freestyle, which stands as one of the country's top times this season by a high schooler. She then went on to win the 100 freestyle in 53.68.

Cindy Tran of Edison (Hb), who is best known for her remarkable national age group backstroke record as a 10 and under swimmer, joined a club of elite backstrokers nationwide with a time of 53.61. That time erased the former Division I meet record of 54.19, which Diana MacManus of Irvine set in 2003. Tran won the consolation finals in the 50 freestyle, taking ninth in 23.47. Her time in the consolation finals would have placed her second in the championship finals to Fascella.

Tran helped two Edison (Hb) relays to victory as well. The 200 medley relay team of Tran, Sarah Moss, Yasi Jahanshahi and Monique Wilson touched first in 1:46.08. Notably, Tran took out the leadoff backstroke leg in 24.66. Alli Gillespie, Kiersten Colesen, Jahanshahi and Tran picked up the second relay win of the meet with a 3:29.86 time in finals.

Men's Individual Results
Tom Shields of Edison (Hb) proved to be one of the fastest high school swimmers in the country all around with two eye-popping performances in each of his individual events. Shields went out in a 47.37 in the first half of the 200 freestyle and held two 24-second 50s to finish up in a time of 1:36.52. Shields' swim is the second-fastest so far this season to Morgan Priestley of Birmingham Seaholm (Mich.).

Shields held off Robert Sullivan of Laguna Hills in the 100 butterfly, taking the event in a Division I record of 47.57. He set the former record in the preliminary heats with a time of 48.00. Shields, in addition to holding the fastest time in the event this season nationwide, fell .47 short of the national high school record, which is shared by Austin Staab of Westerville (Ohio) and Nate Dusing of Covington Catholic (Ky.) at a time of 47.10.

Trevor Hoyt of Yucaipa also placed first in two individual events. Brown took the top honor in the 200 IM (1:50.43) before closing out the final individual event of the meet, the 100 breaststroke, in 56.70.

The 50 freestyle pitted a battle of two sprinting titans, and in the end, Joey Hale of Redlands emerged as the gold-medal winner. Hale and Karl Krug of Yucaipa tied for the Division I record in the preliminary heats with a 20.05 time, but Hale's 19.95 swim in finals left his name as the only one standing. Krug clocked a 19.98. Both men hold the second and third fastest times this year, respectively, to Jimmy Feigen, the national high school record holder from Winston Churchill (Texas). Krug would win the battle in the 100 freestyle, winning in 44.23 to Hale's 44.53. Krug is a Swimming World three-star recruit bound for Auburn University in the fall.

Yucaipa dazzled the high school swimming scene with two standout relay performances. The 200 freestyle relay team of Krug, Hoyt, Clint Johnson and Michael Perry downed the division record of 1:23.58, which the team set in the preliminary heats, with a time of 1:23.04. The time fell just short of the national high school record of 1:22.80 set by Birmingham Brother Rice (Mich.) in 1996. Hoyt, Johnson, Perry and Krug strung together splits of 46.61, 47.45, 45.56 and 44.14 to finish the 400 freestyle relay in a first-place 3:03.76.

Diving Results
Haley McNamara of Mission Viejo topped the female diving competition with a score of 592.05. Paulina Guzman from Millikan earned a second-place finish with a score of 546.35 while Kelsey Heiken of San Clemente earned the bronze with a 525.35 score.

Adam Seagondollar of Corona del Mar eked out a gold-medal performance on the men's side with a 530.90 score. Kyle Kolar from Mission Viejo took second (526.35) while Taylor Nichol from San Clemente rounded out the top three finishers with a score of 494.75.
