Cal State University Campuses Closed Through Fall; How Sports Seasons Affected Uncertain
The Cal State University system, which consists of 23 campuses across the Golden State, said it plans to cancel all in-person classes for the fall semester and to continue with online instruction due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report from ABC7 in California. This is the first major state school to remain closed for the fall semester as this decision could become the first domino to fall and other schools around the United States may follow suit.
“This virtual planning approach for the next academic year is necessary because of the evolving data surrounding the progression of COVID 19,” CSU Chancellor Timothy White explained to CSU trustees.
According to reports, White said non-partisan researchers and health experts forecast additional waves of infection coupled with the flu season in the fall. He added the public immunity rate is very low, and it is not likely a vaccine will be developed during the academic year.
Campuses closing will have a huge affect on local economies and sports teams will have a hard time surviving if schools are not open. The Cal State University system has swim teams in various locations such as San Diego State, San Jose State and Division II Cal State East Bay, among others.
The coronavirus pandemic caused the NCAA Championships to be cancelled this year and all campuses were shut down around the United States in March. It is still uncertain how the closure of campuses will affect sports teams. The Cal State University system is different from the University of California system which houses well-known schools Cal-Berkeley and UCLA.

Please get your facts straight before reporting these stories! You are creating panic! The a Chancellor did not say campuses would be closed, only that most classes would be offered online! There is a big difference!
they arent “creating a panic”. You’re telling them to get their facts straight but the facts are in the article. Lazy headline readers will panic. People who aren’t lazy and actually read will be just fine.
Oline Stehr that’s the news all campuses including Chico cal state east bay San Luis obismo are going online. Watched it on TV this afternoon. Will be no students on campus. So they are correct.
Mike Mcgowan my daughter goes to one of these schools! This is NOT what the actual school is saying!
Buster Smith yes they are, the actual schools have NOT announced they are closing in the Fall, quite the opposite in fact, classes are being signed up for, sports practice dates are being discussed!
Oline Stehr I went to CAL STATE HAYWARD NOW EAST BAY. Just talked to the water polo coach this morning. Just mentioned it was going to be empty in the fall. Together with that news clip I’d have her look into it.
Mike Mcgowan I’m reading the latest statement made today by our school president! It clearly says nothing about closing the campus and canceling sports! They are offering more classes to be made available online, is the main message!
Oline Stehr id keep an eye on it. At the beginning of the year they were going to hold the Olympics. JOC IOC were confident. I lived in Japan 1980-1986. I knew it was not going to happen. So I’d keep an eye out. What state college does she go to.
Mike Mcgowan San Diego State Univ. And yes I agree and we are, but my point was that this article is stating things that are not at the moment facts! It spreads fear and is just bad journalism!
Oline Stehr that was on the list. Just googled some essential classes will be held labs nursing. Those types but rest will be virtual. Funny when I googled saw the Name Timothy White as the head of the system. I went early 70’s had a roommate named Timothy White he was a graduate student.
This is terrible.
Makes sense since California is planning to extend lockdown through the summer. Pure Madness. Ask Elon Musk how he feels about that
