Cal State Northridge v. UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, California, January 18. THE UC Santa Barbara men's and women's swimming teams executed a tremendous victory over the Cal State Northridge Matadors at Campus Pool. On the men's side of the pool, the Gauchos won eight events to beat CSUN 129-64. Junior Chris Good and sophomore Scott Vogelgesang led the male Gauchos with two first place finishes apiece. The women took home nine victories, to win the meet 120-74. Freshman Brittany Borowitz took charge for the lady Gauchos and filled the winning spot in the 100 backstroke and 100 breast.

To get things going for the Gauchos, Naomi Javanifard, Carri Cook, Borowitz, and Courtney Bauer placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:48.02). The men's 200 medley relay did a good job as the following act also taking the title in 1:35.68.

CSUN's Shannon Colavito and Matthew Sulkevich grabbed the 1000 free first place medals but the Gauchos came back in the 200 free. Freshman Lindsay Gaudinier was the forerunner (1:54.87) with Erin Yamamoto and Jamie Cisar trailing for a 1-2-3 finish. Sophomore Matt Bartlett won the men's 200 free in 1:44.15 with Mason Edwards .21 of a second behind him for the number two spot.

Javanifard sprinted her way to the first place finish in the 50 free (24.62) and Vogelgesang took the first of his two victories in the male version of the event (21.88). Sophomore Jessica Schwalb swam the 400 IM in 4:31.04 to beat out teammate Kelsey Lewis for the win. Good beat out sophomore Kristof Igloi by .2 of a second to finish first in the 400 IM.

The 100 fly saw Niki Schrakamp and Vogelgesang end up at the top of the heap after finishing first in their respective races (59.56, 51.72). Bauer edged out her competition to take her place as the victor of the100 free race (52.51). Junior Jeff Sudbury got won the 100 free over Kevin Kuhn in 46.66.

Borowitz obtained her first win of the day in the 100 back after a false start on the first try had the swimmers race after the men's event. Freshman Sierra Palacios got to stand on the winner's podium after beating Colavito in the 500 free (5:12.98). Good took his second victory of the day against Sulkevich by over 16 seconds in the 500 free (4:45.56).

Sophomore Travis Jepson won the 100 breast in 59.30 and Borowitz got the number one spot on the women's side in 1:07.73.
