Cal State-Bakersfield vs. UC-Davis

DAVIS, California, January 31. JUNIOR Russ Underwood swept the sprint freestyle events and sophomore Linda Hermann won two events to highlight a UC Davis sweep over Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference swimming and diving dual at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon. The Aggie men defeated the Roadrunners 160-117 while the women earned a 162-123 victory.

It marks the third consecutive season that UC Davis has swept a dual from Bakersfield. The win improves the men's record to 8-3 while the women are now 8-10. The 'Runners fall to 1-3 on the men's side and 1-8 on the women's side. The victory also marked the women's sixth consecutive dual win over the 'Runners.

The Aggie women won 9 of the first 12 events and swam exhibition in the final three events. The men won the first nine events before swimming the final five as exhibition.

Underwood highlighted the men's victory with individual wins in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard free events. His times were 21.23 in the 50, 46.44 in the 100 and 1:42.88 in the 200 free.

Hermann was also a multiple event winner to help lead the women's team. She won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.57 and the 100 free in 54.29.

Junior Daniel Donnelly and sophomore Paul Navo were also multiple event winners for the men's team. Donnelly's time of 51.13 in 100 back and 49.95 in the 100 butterfly were the second-fastest times ever put up at Schaal Aquatics Center. Donnelly was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team that went 3:25.78. Kyle Anderson, Scott Weltz and Trent Richardson were the other members of that winning team.

Navo claimed wins on both diving boards as the men's diving team saw it's first action in over two months. His winning scores were 246.90 on the low board and 263.18 on the high board. In addition, Navo teamed with fellow divers William LaBarge, Michael Androus and Tristan Kaiser to swim in the 200 free relay.

The UC Davis women also won its opening 200 medley relay race as the team of Rebecca Koch, Lisa Bender, Jenah Dawson and Emily Medved put up a time of 4:03.02.

The remaining event winners for the Aggies included sophomore Julie Peri (200 breast), Kayleigh Foley (200 free), Mary Struempf (100 breast), Jodi Hanson (200 fly), Katelyn Griffin (50 free), Buffy Ajimura (500 free) and Emily Medved as a exhibition swimmer in the 200 individual medley.

Event winners for the men were Anderson (100 breast), Weltz (200 back), Reid Hartz (200 fly), and Keegan Groot (200 breast) and B.J. Scoggan (200 IM) as exhibition swimmers.

UC Davis also won the 200 free relays in exhibition swims.

The Aggies host their final home dual next weekend against Big West Conference for UC Irvine. The event begins at noon and will feature a tribute to the seniors.
