Cal-Berkeley v. UCLA

LOS ANGELES, California, February 2. THE fifth-ranked California women's swimming team completed their sweep of the Southern California schools with a 170-130 dual meet victory over the UCLA Bruins. Cal, who defeated USC on Friday, improved its record to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in Pac-10 play.

The foursome of Lauren Rogers, Lauren Boyle, Dana Vollmer and Madison Kennedy helped the Bears get off on the right track with a 200 medley relay victory of 1:42.66 in the first event of the day.

Just as they did against the Trojans, Cal controlled the freestyle events. Boyle earned a first place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 16:33.40. Sara Sun placed third in the 1650 with a time of 16:55.01.

Emily Silver was dominant again in the 200 free, touching the wall first with a time of 1:48.25, while freshman Hannah Wilson came in fourth at 1:49.49.

Lauren Rogers paced the field in the 100 back with a first-place time of 55.77 (Also an NCAA B time), nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Isabell Fisher of UCLA. Rogers also nabbed a first place victory in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.30.

Cal finished 1-2-3 in the 200 fly led by junior Dana Vollmer's first place time of 1:59.44. Rachel Ridgeway (2:00.77) and Amanda Sims (2:01.30) finished second and third respectively.

Silver and Anna Poteete of UCLA finished in a tie for first in the 50 free at 23.15. However in the 100 free, it was Silver who claimed first place with a time of 50.13, .10 seconds better than Poteete. Wilson (50.80) and Kennedy (50.80) finished in a third place tie as well in the 100.

Another Cal 1-2-3 finish also occurred in the 100 fly with Tara Thomas pacing the field with a first-place time of 56.39. Sims (56.63) and Wilson (57.06) finished second and third respectively.

Ridgeway earned an NCAA B qualifying time of 4:19.44 in the 400 IM as well. Cal's foursome of Vollmer, Kennedy, Wilson and Silver also captured first place in the 200 free relays with a time of 1:32.22.
