Caeleb Dressel Dials Up Victory in 50-Meter Freestyle at ISCA Senior Cup

Two-time defending world champion Caeleb Dressel had no trouble capturing first place in the 50-meter freestyle at the ISCA International Senior Cup in St. Petersburg on Thursday night. Dressel, who is the heavy favorite to win gold in the event at this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, registered a time of 22.33, a strong showing considering Dressel remains in heavy training.

Dressel posted a time of 19.03 for the 50-yard freestyle during prelims. The meet has adopted a format in which the preliminaries are held in short-course yards, with the evening finals shifting to long-course meters. Dressel was unchallenged in the final, as his winning time was .38 clear of the 22.71 that Matej Dusa produced for second place. Olympic medalists Jack Conger (23.21) and Joseph Schooling (23.25) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the men’s 50 breaststroke, Ilya Evdokimov claimed first place when he covered the distance in 28.29, slightly quicker than the 28.44 posted by Nils Wich-Glasen. Dressel was the top seed following the morning preliminaries, but he opted to bypass the final and focus on the 50 freestyle.

Sherridon Dressel joined her brother as a winner when she topped the field in the 200 backstroke. Dressel was timed in 2:13.51, which was fast enough to beat Reka Gyorgy (2:13.65). In the 50 freestyle, Farida Osman cruised to a triumph in 25.21.
