Caeleb Dressel Adds Another National Age Group Record in 50 Free Time Trial

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, June 26. AS if swimming three 200 freestyles in one day wasn't enough, 16-year-old Caeleb Dressel decided to sneak in a 50 freestyle time trial between prelims and finals of the USA Swimming nationals … and tied the 15-16 national age group record.

Dressel swam a 22.72 in the time trial, tying Shayne Fleming's mark that has stood since 2008. That makes it three national record swims in a little more than 24 hours for the Bolles sprinter. On Tuesday, he twice lowered the 100 free record, taking it down to 49.50 in the championship final after posting 49.63 in prelims.

Dressel swam the time trial today because he's returning to Florida Thursday. With only qualifying times for the 100 and 200 freestyles, Dressel had planned to return to Jacksonville, Fla., to swim in a meet there. The 50 free will be on that list of events.

Before he boards a plane, he has the 200 free tonight, in which he is the top seed in the C final, reserved for the top 18-and-under swimmers who did not make it into the top 16. Could he challenge Ian Crocker's national age group of 1:49.48 from 1998? Dressel swam a 1:50.69 in the prelims today, then a little bit faster in a swimoff against Alex Wold, winning with a 1:50.47.
