Buffalo vs. St. Bonaventure

BUFFALO, New York, February 5. BOTH of the University at Buffalo's swimming and diving teams concluded the 2011 regular season with home victories over St. Bonaventure at Alumni Arena Natatorium on Saturday on Senior Day. The UB men snapped a two-meet losing streak to down the Bonnies, 161-127, while the UB women took their sixth straight win with a 174-103 decision.

The Bulls used their depth to win on Saturday as no men's individual won more than one race and just two women scored double wins.

Scoring a double win for the UB women (7-2) in the pool was Logan Mason. The sophomore set a season-best in winning the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.37. She also won the 100-yard freestyle in 53.70. Mason also anchored UB's victorious 200-yard medley relay squad with Marissa Murphy, Brynn Marecki and Jessie Koltz in the water before her. Freshman Ava Giachino swept the women's diving competitions. Giachino scored 247.43 points for her six dives from the one-meter board and followed with a three-meter victory with 234.45 points.

Two other UB women's freestylers also posted season-best times in their victories. Karly Moore bettered her previous best with a 24.17 clocking to win the 50-yard freestyle. Tracy Vogel emerged victorious in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.00.

Other individual wins for the UB women included both distance freestyle races as Emma Miller won the 500-yard race in 5:09.72 and Amanda Reall took the 1,000-yard distance in 10:41.29. The Bulls also swept both backstroke and breaststroke events. In the backstroke, Katelyn Pratt-Collins won the 100-yard race in 59.23 while Renae Sharkey took the 200-yard distance in 2:10.58. In the breaststroke, Marecki won the 100-yard event in 1:05.83 with Alie Schirmers taking the 200-yard distance in 2:28.43.

The UB men (6-2) won 10 of the first 13 events and exhibitioned the final two races. The 200-yard medley relay foursome of Phil Aronica, Matt Hogan, Matt Schwippert and Jared Heine got things started with a season-best time of 1:30.91 to take the first race of the meet.

All four of the relayers won their individual races as well. Hogan took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.10. Heine won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.01. Aronica claimed the 200-yard backstroke in 1:53.22 and Schwippert won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.42.

The Bulls swept the butterfly races with Cory Zorsch winning the 100-yard event in 50.24 and Eric Culver win the 200-yard race in 1:54.28. Christian Muller set a season-best to win the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.85.

UB men's divers also claimed first-place on both springborards. Colin Patrican won the one-meter event with 332.33 points with Kenny Rhoades picking up a victory on the three-meter board at 348.45.

Prior to the meet, the Bulls honored their 2011 senior class. Women's seniors included Jordan Deren, Koltz, Alisa Koopman, Catherine Scharf and Sharkey. Participating in their final home men's meet were Rhoades and Sterling Gell.

Both squads now will prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships. The women's championship begins February 23 in Athens, OH. The men's championship is the following week, starting March 3, in Carbondale, IL.
