Brown Trumps Gold in Wyoming Intrasquad

LARAMIE, Wyoming, October 5. IN its only exhibition dual of the season, the Wyoming swimming and diving teams battled in the annual Brown and Gold dual on Friday, in Corbett Pool. The Brown team defeated the Gold team with a final score of 303.5 to 278.5. The UW team was split into two co-ed teams to swim and dive for team bragging rights.

“This was significantly the fastest Brown and Gold meet we have ever had,” Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson said. “I am so happy the way we swam today. There are areas of concern and their always will be, but I was really pleased with our effort today. I am the most happy about how deep our team is. On the women's side Morgan (Hartigan) was special today and for the men Adam Kalms was a beast.”

Starting the meet in the women's 200 medley relay, the Brown team 'A' squad of Jordan Denny, Stephanie Young, Mackenzie Norlin and Melanie McDonough took first place with a time of 1:45.75. The Gold squad of Nikki Finnesand, Emma Dow, Jessy Badaracco and Emily Ridout took second place with a time of 1:48.53. The Brown 'B' group of Emily Stucky, Halie Lacey, Molly Coonce and Karen Hendrick (1:50.22) finished third. In the men's 200 medley relay, the Gold 'A' squad of Jayce Calhoon, Jeff Frey, Tyler Kybartas and Ryan O'Leary took first with a time of 1:34.91. The Brown 'A' team of Matt Cook, Kyle Scalise, Jackson Colter and Ethan Griffel took second with a time of 1:37.66.

In the women's 1000 freestyle, the Gold team's Nicole Hlavacek finished 10 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor with a time of 10:42.65. Her teammate on the Gold team Emma Dow finished second (10:52.38), while the Brown team's Kasey Robinson finished third with a time of 10:59.85. Brown team's Lauren McClure finished fourth (11:01.22) and the Gold's Aliyah Mikulski finished fifth (11:19.08). On the men's side of the 1000 free, freshman Ryan Nelson took first with a time of 9:56.11, followed by Gold teammate Kevin Waller in second (10:02.84). Brown team's Joseph Ferreri finished third with a time of 10:12.75.

In the 200 freestyle, Denny grabbed her first individual victory with a time of 1:54.52, followed by Brown teammate Leah Roesler in second with a time of 1:57.29. Finishing third, fourth and fifth were Gold teammates, Paige Fischer (1:57.70), Nicole Boyce (1:58.81) and Keara Chang (1:58.89). For the men, the Brown team finished first and second with Griffel touching the wall in first with a time of 1:42.69, followed by Kalms in second with a time of 1:43.62. The Gold team's O'Leary (1:45.40) and Kevin Waller (1:49.76) finished third and fourth, respectively.

The women's 100 backstroke, the Brown team finished first and second for the second-consecutive event with McDonough and Stucky taking first and second with times of 59.36 and 59.77, respectively. The Gold team's Finnesand finished third with a time of 59.81, while teammate Ridout touched the wall in fourth (1:00.35). The men's Gold team touched the wall in first and second in the 100 back, with Calhoon taking first (52.93) and Brendan Costello finishing second (53.39). The Brown team's Cook (54.50), Austin Layman (55.39) and Bradford (57.67) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Morgan Hartigan touched the wall first for the Gold team in the women's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.77. The Brown team's Young finished second (1:05.74), followed by Lilly Parks of the gold team in third with a time of 1:08.74. Also scoring were Brown teammates Meghan Swirzcki and Lacey finished fourth and fifth with times of 1:08.85 and 1:09.28, respectively. In the men's 100 breast Mike McCormick placed first with a time of 59.59, with Brown teammates Jordan Turner taking second (1:00.91) and Scalise finishing third (1:01.07). Evan Oleson scored for the Gold team taking fourth with a time of 1:02.75.

The women's 200 butterfly was the next event with the Gold team finishing first and second. Jessy Badaracco and Claudia Carlson touched the wall in first and second with times of 2:07.35 and 2:08.36, respectively. The Brown team's Karen Hendrick took third (2:10.31) followed by teammate Molly Coonce in fourth with a time of 2:12.61. George Englesfield (1:53.04) and Tyler Kybartas (1:55.26) finished the men's 200 butterfly in first and second, respectively for the Gold team. Taking third, fourth and fifth for the Brown squad were Trevor LeValley (1:56.10), Ferreri (1:59.84) and Colter (2:00.75).

In the final event before the first diving session, Stucky took first place in the 50 freestyle for the Brown team with a time of 24.87. Her teammate Shayna Swanson finished second with a time of 25.09. The Gold team's Keara Chang (25.28) and Sarae Dydo (25.31) finished third and fourth, respectively. The men's 50 freestyle was won by Kalms of the Brown team with a time of 20.86. For the Gold, Jeff Frey was one-hundredth of a second behind in second place with a time of 20.98. Brown teammates Bryce Carter and Nick Rutecki touched the wall in third and fourth with times of 21.10 and 21.60, respectively.

The first round of diving followed the 50 freestyle. On the men's 1-meter springboard, Garrett Kirk representing the Brown team took first with a mark of 241.95. Gold's Eric McMillin finished second with a mark of 235.35. The first round of diving for the women was the 3-meter springboard. Brown team's Carolyn Wallace finished first with a final mark of 251.50. Finishing second and third were Gold teammates Sasha Andrie (243.75) and Mercedes Clement (234.50), respectively. In fourth was Amanda Fay of the Brown team with a mark of 229.20.

Following the diving break the racing resumed with the women's 100 freestyle. Finishing first with her second individual event win was Gold team member Hartigan with a time of 52.71. In second was McDonough with a time of 53.20 for the Brown team. Gold team's Ridout and Dydo finished third and fourth, respectively with times of 54.35 and 55.04. For the men, Kalms of the Brown team won his second individual event of the evening with a time of 45.63. Also for the Brown squad Carter finished second with a time of 46.86. O'Leary (46.96) and Frey (47.34) touched wall in third and fourth, respectively for the Gold team.

Denny of the Brown team won her second individual event of the dual in the 200 backstroke touching the wall in 2:05.15. In second was the Gold team's Finnesand with a time of 2:12.08. Norlin finished third for the Brown team with a time of 2:13.10, followed by Brooklyn Neubig of the Gold team in fourth (2:20.16). On the men's side the Gold team took first, second and third place. Calhoon won his second individual event with a time of 1:53.15, followed by Costello (1:56.70) in second and Eglesfield in third (1:58.77).

In the women's 200 breaststroke, Young won her first individual event for the Brown team with a time of 2:26.16. Her teammates Swirzcki and Lacey finished the race second and third with times of 2:27.21 and 2:28.52, respectively. McCormick won his second individual event and his second breaststroke event on the men's side with a time of 2:13.52. Also for the Brown team, Scalise (2:14.59) and Turner (2:14.84) took second and third, respectively.

In the final distance freestyle event of the dual, the 500 free, Hlavacek won her second event for the Gold team with a time of 5:12.71. Her teammate Fischer finished second touching the wall with a time of 5:21.26. McClure finished third for the Brown team with a time of 5:24.99 and her teammate Robinson finished fourth (5:26.42). The Gold team won both the 500 freestyles with Kybartas winning the men's 500 free with a time of 4:46.03. Griffel finished close behind Kybartas in second for the Brown team with a time of 4:46.15. Waller finished third for the Gold team (4:46.81), followed by LeValley in fourth (4:52.58) for the Brown.

“Our men's 500 freestyle was 15 seconds faster than a season ago,” Johnson said. “It was not just one guy faster in it, it was three.”

Carlson won her first individual event of the evening for the Gold team in the 100 butterfly touching the wall in 57.50. In second was Roesler (58.69), followed by Coonce in third (58.93) and Hendrick (1:00.14) in fourth, who were all for the Brown team. For the men, Rutecki won his first individual event for the Brown team with a time of 50.68. Eglesfield of the Gold team finished second with a time of 51.99. Colter finished third for the Brown (53.18), followed by Leidy of the Gold in fourth (56.14).

The second diving session came after the 100 butterfly event. On the women's 1-meter springboard, Andrie finished first for the Gold team with a mark of 271.05. In second place was the Brown team's Wallace with a final mark of 249.30. The Gold team's Heussner finished third with a score of 238.20, followed by the Brown team's Abbey Miller in fourth (234.75). On the men's 3-meter, McMillin won the event for the Gold team with a score of 216.00. Kirk finished the 3-meter in second for the Brown team with a score of 192.45.

“I am proud of how my divers did tonight,” diving coach Yahya Radman said. “We defiantly have some areas to work on, but the potential is great for this team. We can build off the highs, but we need to keep working hard.”

The final individual event of the evening was the 200 individual medley. Hartigan won her third individual event for the Gold team in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.74. Her teammate Badaracco touched the wall in second with a time of 2:10.61. The Brown team's Norlin finished third with a time of 2:14.61, followed by teammate Coonce in fourth (2:15.58). On the men's side Nelson won his second individual event of the dual for the Gold team touching the wall with a time of 1:57.32. For the Brown squad LeValley and Turner finished second and third with times of 1:59.72 and 2:00.40, respectively.

The final event of the dual was the 400 freestyle relay. The Brown 'A' relay team of Denny, Robinson, Stucky and McDonough won the event with a time of 3:32.06. The Gold 'A' team of Carlson, Finnesand, Fischer and Hartigan finished second (3:35.93), followed by the Gold 'B' team of Chang, Hlavacek, Ridout and Boyce in third (3:40.10). The Brown team completed the 400 free relay sweep with its 'A' team taking victory on the men's side. Cowboys Griffel, Cook, Carter and Kalms won the relay with a time of 3:05.21. The Gold 'A' squad of O'Leary, Scalise, Bradford and Layman finished second with a time of 3:07.64.

Wyoming swimming will return to the pool for its first regular season meet on Saturday, Oct. 13 for the Denver University Relays in Denver, Colo., beginning at noon.

“I am really looking forward to next weekend at Denver, even dropping down 1,700 feet in elevation really helps,” Johnson said. “It should be a good measuring stick to see where we are.”
