Brittany MacLean unleashed a Canadian record time in the women’s 200-meter free by winning in 1:56.94 at the 2016 Canadian Trials.

That swim clipped Genevieve Saumur’s 2009 national record of 1:56.97, and clinched MacLean another spot on the Olympic roster.

MacLean has been on fire since having an unbelievable meet for the University of Georgia at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships. That’s also MacLean’s second Canadian record of the week after downing the 400 free mark with a 4:03.84.

She now owns four of the six Canadian freestyle records with the 800 (8:20.02) and 1500 free (15:57.15) both happening at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.

Penny Oleksiak, the 15-year-old wonder this week in the 100 fly, clinched another Olympic berth with a 1:57.59 for second overall.

Katerine Savard (1:58.17) and Kennedy Goss (1:58.26) earned relay spots, while Taylor Ruck (1:58.67) and Jacqueline Keire (1:59.88) finished fifth and sixth.

Alyson Ackman (2:00.27), Meryn McCann (2:00.30), Rebecca Smith (2:01.11) and Samantha Cheverton (2:02.10) also competed in the finale.

Guess that coach The ‘Dawg Pound must know a thing or three about developing swimmers. And presuming Leah Smuth makes it to Rio in the 409-800 that great rivalry she and McLean have GS’d last coupke of tears NCAAs could be renewed again.

‘ Course it’ll all be academic when you know who goes 1:48-plus, 3:50 something and sub- 8:00.0! Hmmm. Wonder if they’ll let her swim against Horton and Sun? Naw…it’d be too embarrassing when she beats ’em!
