British Long Course Nationals: Elizabeth Simmonds Cracks 1:00 in 100 Back; David Carry Notches Olympic Bid

SHEFFIELD, England, June 20. WITH nearly half of its Olympic roster spots still up for grabs, the British Long Course Nationals is serving as step two for Olympic qualifying for the host nation, which has observed a fairly convoluted qualifying process.

Elizabeth Simmonds became just the 10th woman under 1:00 in the women's 100 back this year with a 59.89 for the win. That swim matched the eighth-ranked season best of Missy Franklin posted at the Indy Grand Prix in March. Simmonds moved ahead of Gemma Spofforth (1:00.19) as the top swimmer from her country this year. Georgia Davies earned second in 1:00.60, while Lauren Quigley touched third in 1:00.72.

David Carry topped the men's 400 free in 3:46.86, moving to ninth in the world rankings, and second in his nation behind Robert Renwick (3:46.73.). Ieuan Lloyd took second in 3:48.10, while Sergii Frolov of Ukraine placed third in 3:52.12. Lloyd cleared his 22nd-ranked season best of 3:48.86 to move up to 16th. Lloyd likely locked up the second Olympic spot in the event with that swim.

Siobhan-Marie O'Connor dominated the women's 200 IM with a 2:11.86 to move to 13th in the world in the event. Stacey Tadd finished second in 2:15.39, while Lucy Spencer earned third in 2:15.44. Richard Webb won the men's 100 breast in 1:01.64, missing the second open spot on the team that will likely fall to Michael Jamieson. Aleksander Hetland of Norway took second in 1:02.24, while Andrew Willis placed third in 1:02.40.

Rebecca Adlington cruised to victory in the women's 200 free with a 1:58.68, while Rebecca Turner claimed second in 1:59.11. Lucy Ellis picked up third in 1:59.14. With no one beating the qualifying time for the second spot, Caitlin McClatchey's 1:58.07 should stand up for the second Olympic spot. Kathryn Johnston led an Edinburgh podium sweep of the women's 50 breast with a 31.69. Teammates Andrea Strachan (31.81) and Corrie Scott (32.09) placed second and third.

Luke Wood touched out David Gregory, 25.77 to 25.79, in the men's 50 back. Joseph Patching wound up third in 26.26. Matthew Johnson won the men's 200 fly in 1:59.71. Cameron Brodie (2:00.56) and Iain Macmillan (2:00.99) finished second and third. Tilly Gray captured the women's 100 fly in 1:00.42. Elena Sheridan (1:00.68) and Rachel Lefley (1:01.21) rounded out the top three.
