British Championships: Flash! Liam Tancock Blasts 50 Back World Record

SHEFFIELD, England, April 2. DURING evening prelims of the men's 200 backstroke, the already pre-selected Liam Tancock used the chance to drop the world record in the men's 50 back at the British Championships.

Tancock, who wound up finishing 45th overall with a time of 2:16.97, demolished the previous world record in the 50 back with a split of 24.47. Tancock, who is already a lock for the 2008 Beijing Games, had nothing to lose as he left nothing in the tank after the initial 50 meters.

Germany's Thomas Rupprath previously owned the record with a time of 24.80 set on July 27, 2003 in Barcelona, Spain.
