Brazil Swimming will be well represented in the final major international swim meets before the country hosts the Summer Olympics, with strong squads headed to the world championships, Pan American Games and junior world championships.

Twenty-five will go to Kazan for the world championships, including two-time reigning world titlist Cesar Cielo. Though the Brazilian swimming federation did not list the events which the athletes will swim, it is likely that Cielo will race the 50 freestyle and butterfly, and likely the 100 freestyle. Etiene Medeiros, the reigning short course world champion in the 50 backstroke, will be joined by Joanna Maranhao as the two leaders among a women’s team that appears to get stronger every year.

Brazil will also be strong at the Pan American Games, with many of the world championships athletes racing in Toronto two weeks before heading to Kazan for worlds. Cielo will not be one of them, though 100 free junior world record holder Matheus Santana will be one of the two to pull double duty in his first senior-level championships.

Santana was a standout at last year’s Youth Olympics, where he set the junior world record, and we’ll see which of the 20 members of the junior world championships will rise to that next level. Brandonn Almeida, who won the 1500 free in a national record time at the Maria Lenk trophy meet, will compete at the junior worlds and the Pan American Games.
