Bob Bowman, Dave Salo, Tim Murphy Added to U.S. Olympic Coaching Staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 1. USA Swimming today named Tim Murphy, Bob Bowman and Dave Salo to its 2012 Olympic swim team coaching staff. Murphy will lead the U.S. open water Olympic team, Bowman will serve as an assistant coach for the men's swim team and Salo will be an assistant coach for the women's team.

Leading up to next year's Olympic Games, Bowman will work with Olympic Men's Head Coach Gregg Troy and Salo will team with Women's Head Coach Teri McKeever to help prepare the U.S. swim team for success in London.

The remaining four members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic swim team coaching staff will be named at the conclusion of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming from June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb.

"We are thrilled to add Tim Murphy, Bob Bowman and Dave Salo to our 2012 Olympic coaching staff," said Frank Busch, USA Swimming's National Team Director. "We are incredibly fortunate to have coaches of this caliber in the U.S. and we look forward to a successful Olympic Games under their expert guidance."

Murphy was most recently the men's open water head coach at this summer's FINA World Championships. Murphy has also been a part of team coaching staffs at other national-level meets, including World University Games and the FINA Short Course World Championships. Murphy has been the men's head coach for Harvard University's swimming and diving program for the past 13 seasons, winning six Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championships and tallying six undefeated seasons.

Bowman is a two-time Olympic men's assistant coach (2008, 2004). He was the head coach of the U.S. men's team at the 2009 and 2007 FINA World Championships and has served as a World Championships assistant coach four times. He is currently the head coach and general manager of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club in Maryland and serves as personal coach to 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.

Next year's Olympic Games will also mark Salo's third time on the U.S. Olympic coaching staff. Salo served as a women's assistant coach in 2000 and a men's assistant coach in 2004. In 2008, Salo was a part of Tunisia's Olympic coaching staff. Salo is in his sixth year as the head swim coach at the University of Southern California. Prior to his time at USC, Salo was the head coach for the Irvine Novaquatics from 1990 to 2006.
