Blue Grass Mountain Conference: Day Three

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, February 19. THE Wingate University men's swimming team is in first place after day three of the 2010 BGMC Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center (MCAC) pool in downtown Charlotte. The Bulldog women are currently in second place entering the fourth and final day of competition Saturday.

The Wingate men have 446 points; second-place the University of Tampa has 410 points. BGMC newcomer Johns Hopkins (Md.) University is third on the men's charts with 352 points. The Tampa Spartans made a big move in the women's race, taking the lead with 495 points. Wingate is second with 371 points. Johns Hopkins is a close third with 362 points.

For the men, Wingate senior Kyle Corcoran (Kent, Wash.) wrote his name in the BGMC record books Friday, winning the post-season 400 Individual Medley for the fourth time in four tries. His winning time of 3:59.88 is the fourth-fastest in NCAA Division II this year. Bulldog junior teammate Marcello Machado (Recife, Brazil) placed third with a time of 4:04.03. Machado missed an NCAA Division II "A" Cut by 4/100 of a second.

Bulldog senior Gus Chagas (Recife, Brazil) finished third in his signature event, the 200 Freestyle. Chagas won the NCAA Division II national championship in the 200 Free at the 2007 NCAA meet. On Friday, he posted a "B" Cut time of 1:41.29. Classmate

Daniel De Francisco (Cali, Colombia) won the 200 Freestyle consolation race with a "B" Cut time of 1:43.31.

Wingate placed two-three in the 100 Breaststroke. Senior Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.) was second with a time of 57.15. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® candidate posted an "A" Cut in the 100 Breaststroke at December's SCAD College Invitational. Freshman Rory Julyan (Cape Town, South Africa) was third with a personal-best time of 57.76. Senior Kevin Hennessy (Yorktown, Va.) won the 100 Breaststroke consolation race with a time of 59.52.

Earlier in the day, Julyan helped Wingate finish fifth in the 200 Medley Relay race with a time of 1:34.27. The Bulldog men had five All-BGMC swims Friday night.

For the women, the Wingate women's 200 Medley Relay made a big statement in the morning preliminaries, posting the fastest time with an NCAA Division II "A" Cut of 1:48.33. In the evening finals, the number one-seeded quartet placed fourth with a time of 1:48.48. The group includes seniors Samantha Vencl (Wickliffe, Ohio) and Rebecca Gerbert (South Euclid, Ohio) and juniors Nicole Moody (Grovetown, Ga.) and Cheryl Vaccaro (Charlotte, N.C.).

The foursome was not finished by any means. Vencl won the 100 Butterfly consolation race with a time of 58.98. She missed a "B" Cut by 8/100 of a second. Vaccaro placed eighth in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:58.16.

Bulldog junior Sarah Supcoe (Charleston, W.Va.) added another All-BGMC award to her trophy case, placing third in the 400 Individual Medley with a "B" Cut time of 4:36.30. The fourth and final day of the BGMC Championships is Saturday, with the preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. The finals are slated to start at 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 per session.
